WASHINGTON, September 20 (CNNBreakingNews.net) — A man had already been taken into custody after the Washington Monument was destroyed late Tuesday was, police said, adding that the area around the memorial base was temporarily closed.
“The area around the Washington Monument base is temporarily closed. USPP has adult men in custody for vandalism. NPS (National Park Service) restorers will be working on the restoration process,” the United States Park Police (USPP) said on Twitter.
Pictures posted on Twitter by local media showed red paint smeared on the west side of the base of the memorial.
The 550-foot memorial is a popular tourist attraction and is located in the National Mall between Lincoln Memorial and the Capitol in Washington
