Doha, Qatar — Abubakr Abbass, a 23-year-old from Kenya, became a firm fan favorite and random social media sensation during the soccer World Cup in Qatar.
Sits on a tennis date chair and has a large foam finger. He guides the hundreds of fans who visit the historic market — known as Souq Waqif — to the nearby metro station using his familiar megaphone.
His helpful advice: “Metro? That way. Subway? In this way,” has now become a famous buzzword.
“We love him, we love the guy from the subway,” one fan said, pointing to Abbass.
“I saw him on TikTok. I found it really funny. He makes me laugh; it’s such an easy task,” added a young fan, dressed in a Chelsea soccer shirt.
People who visit the popular Souq Waqif interact regularly with Abbass, switching back and forth, and creating pantomime-like scenes.
Not much is known about Abbass, but the mysterious social media star has earned praise for bringing enthusiasm to an otherwise mundane task.
“He really enjoys his job,” said an enthusiastic fan.
Abbass is now inspiring other workers to join the fun. Many of them now wear his typical foam finger and give fans instructions in creative ways.
