Following Argentina’s victory in the soccer World Cup, Buenos Aires now has a new mural that captures the moment when Lionel Messi raised the iconic trophy.
The artist Maximiliano Bagnasco has put the finishing touches on his work of art on a street corner in the Palermo district of the capital.
It shows a picture that will be incorporated into the soccer history of Argentina and of millions of other people all over the world.
Messi stands in the middle and holds up the trophy while wearing the Bisht, the black and gold tunic that Qatar’s leader wears over his shoulders as he prepares to pick up the cup.
Behind Messi, raising his arms euphorically, is goalkeeper Emiliano ‘Dibu’ Martínez, the hero of the penalty shootout against France in the final.
On their sides are the tips of Paulo Dybala and Rodrigo de Paul’s heads.
Designed to draw… on a wall
Bagnasco told The Associated Press that he knew he wanted to paint a mural before the finale.
“Days before the game, I had talked about building a wall and I had prepared the materials. I just watched the game and waited for the picture. I went out, partied a bit and then worked on the painting again and the next day I got all the equipment ready to win the trophy with this mural,” he said.
Dominique Rolley, a foreign tourist in Buenos Aires, believes the fresco is very well done.
“I’m happy for Messi because Messi is going to retire. He’s going to stop playing soccer and it’s good for him to have the trophy,” said Rolley.
Bagnasco is also the creator of a monumental mural of another of Argentina’s great soccer heroes, Diego Maradona, in a building on the outskirts of Buenos Aires.
It was inaugurated on October 30, when the 1986 world champion would have turned 62 years old.
