2022 could still be a wonderful surprise for lovers of an exceptional European breed, the Lipizzan horse. Eight European countries have previously teamed up with UNESCO, the cultural agency, to grant the Lipizzan horse breeding tradition UNESCO World Heritage Site status, and they are waiting for a decision by the end of this month.
The Lipizzaner horse is a noble breed whose ancestors date back to 1580, when the Habsburg Emperor Ferdinand I founded a stud farm near Lipica (today Slovenia).
The centuries-old tradition of horse breeding continues today in eight European countries: Austria, Bosnia-Herzegovina, Croatia, Hungary, Italy, Romania, Slovakia and Slovenia. They have come together to secure the future of horse breeding in Europe, and UNESCO has granted it World Heritage status.
They are still waiting for the decision, which is expected by the end of this month.
Lipizzan is an endangered horse breed, as it is estimated that there are only 8000 left in the world.
One of the stables that hope UNESCO status will guarantee the future of the Lipizzaner horses is the Vucijak Stud, which was founded in 1946 in the former Yugoslavia.
According to Miroslav Milanković, the manager of the stud farm, Lipizzaner horses are characterized by grace, beauty and swan-like necks.
Their particular lineage spans almost 500 years of history. It is also said that Lipizzans are the proudest horses, but also the most spirited and energetic.
“If you train them properly and gain their trust, the most obedient. After you gain their trust, they trust you forever. But just give them a reason to distrust you and they’ll never trust you again. Once you hurt them, they’ll stay hurt forever,” says Mićo Žuna, horse trainer at the farm
