Who is more popular in the Harry Potter series than Dobby the House Elf?
No one, that’s who. When this poor little elf came to an unfortunate end, millions of children and adults around the world shed a tear over their volumes.
When Dobby died in the movies, the elf’s funeral scene was filmed on Freshwater West Beach in Pembrokeshire.
In typical Potter fan behavior, the commercial has since become a public shrine for the house elves.
A grave that pays tribute was surrounded by pebbles and socks, which represent the garment that freed Dobby from servitude in the story.
The National Trust Wales, which deals with environmental effects, recently conducted a consultation asking whether Dobby’s grave needed to be moved.
The beach is a legally protected nature reserve with unique wildlife, including large grey seals, porpoises and seabirds.
Luckily, the consultation has come back and says Dobby’s grave won’t be moved.
The National Trust Wales has asked fans of the cute animal to come and just take pictures of the website. “Objects such as socks, jewelry and paint chips from painted pebbles could enter the marine environment and the food chain and endanger wild animals.”
Here are a few of our other favorite pilgrimage sites for cultural heroes.
Oscar Wilde, the Romantic
The Irish wordsmith was able to put together a joke of astonishing beauty and sneering wit like no other. He was once again romantic, his life was tragic and always inspiringly brave.
It is only natural that the poet’s grave is in the Père Lachaise cemetery, a slap-bang in the center of the city of Romance, Paris.
Unlike the typical Gothic tombs that surround it, Wild’s Tomb is an art deco masterpiece based on his poem The Sphinx and was designed by sculptor Jacob Epstein.
Since his death, there has been a tradition of kissing the grave. Thousands of visitors apply lipstick every year and leave a huge old mark on the stone. Others have written Wilde Love Letters to his grave.
Always the romantic, Wilde would probably approve. But the people responsible for maintaining the grave were pretty upset. The graffiti was surprisingly fine, but the grease in lipstick caused permanent damage to the stone.
Initially, a fine of 9,000€ was imposed. It was to no avail. Most were able to get their kisses faster than any guard could fine them.
Instead, the grave now has a transparent plastic kiss barrier in front of it. People still give the barrier a kiss, but it doesn’t really feel that way.
Ianto’s Schrein
Another fictional one in Wales too. While Dobby was a supporting character in one of the most popular children’s series of all time, Ianto was a supporting character in a spin-off show one of the most popular TV series of all time.
In the mid-2000s, “Doctor Who” was the biggest show on British television, which required a spin-off. Enter “Torchwood,” a more adult version of the show with sexy violent themes.
As Torchwood was more comfortable with gruesome deaths, fans were devastated when one of the show’s fan favorites, Ianto Jones, experienced his untimely death.
In Cardiff city center, where the show took place, Ianto’s shrine is very popular with tons of letters, photos, poetry, and more adorning it.
It even has its own Twitter account, which keeps you up to date on the status of the pure Ianto Jones memorial.
The forest of fictional funerals
If you go into the woods in Italy, you may be in for a big surprise.
In Piedmont, an artist collective has created a graveyard for all fallen fictional heroes they believe deserve a final resting place.
The Eredi Brancusi Foundation was founded when Romanian sculptor Costantin Brancusi, who died in 1957, began creating artistic interpretations of the graves of fictional characters in a forest in the Cuneo region.
Since the first Brancusi started building these fictional graves, his entire family has been involved.
Now the selection of graves includes those for Anna Karenina, Dorian Gray, Obi Wan Kenobi, Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid.

Initially, a fine of 9,000€ was imposed. It was to no avail. Most were able to get their kisses faster than any guard could fine them.

In Cardiff city center, where the show took place, Ianto’s shrine is very popular with tons of letters, photos, poetry, and more adorning it.

Der Wald der fiktiven Beerdigungen
If you go into the woods in Italy, you may be in for a big surprise.
Now the selection of graves includes those for Anna Karenina, Dorian Gray, Obi Wan Kenobi, Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid.
