It seems like it wasn’t too long ago that THC was just THC — and it was illegal in most places. Now that cannabis laws are relaxing in the United States, you can find a wide variety of products online and in stores that promote various “deltas” of THC, mostly Delta 8 or Delta 9, but what are they and what does taking them mean to you?
In this article, we’ll explain the differences between Delta 8 and Delta 9 THC and also talk about some of our favorite THC products from one of our favorite brands. Let’s start with Delta 9 because it’s easier to explain.
What is Delta 9 THC?
Tetrahydrocannabinol, or THC, is naturally found throughout the cannabis plant, but there are slightly different forms of it based on molecular structure. In raw, live cannabis, it mainly takes the form of THCA, which is actually not exhilarating. That’s why people dry it, smoke it, and/or bake it into things to get that high. The heat turns the THCa into Delta 9 THC, and that is the substance that gives you these psychoactive effects.
Because it requires so little processing to obtain Delta 9 THC, it is basically the “natural” form of the compound. If you’ve smoked whole cannabis or eaten an edible made from it, the Delta 9 is responsible for most of what you feel.
What is Delta 8 THC?
Delta 8 is another molecular variant of THC that occurs naturally in the cannabis plant, but only in tiny amounts. Extracting it is usually not worth it. Why are we seeing it everywhere now?
The reason is that technicians have figured out how to synthesize it from another compound from cannabis that you’ve probably heard of — CBD. As you may have noticed, there is plenty of CBD, making Delta 8 pretty easy for cannabis companies to make.
Delta 8 vs Delta 9: The differences that are important
As we’ve mentioned earlier, when you consume whole cannabis, you primarily feel the Delta 9. With a Delta 9 product, you’re likely to feel similar. Based on user experience, Delta 8 is less effective—some people call it “diet THC.”
For this reason, you may prefer Delta 9 if you either want to get stoned or use THC to solve a specific problem, such as nausea or insomnia. On the other hand, if you’re prone to negative THC side effects such as paranoia, you’re likely to feel them more strongly too.
Another thing to keep in mind about Delta 8 THC is that it is made from solvents that can be harmful to your health. The FDA issued a warning about this not too long ago.
Legality is another important difference between Delta 8 and Delta 9. The 2018 Farm Bill legalizing CBD didn’t expect you to be able to make a form of THC from it, so Delta 8 is technically just as legal as CBD. However, Delta 9 products may still be legal nationwide as long as they are derived from industrial hemp and the THC does not exceed 0.3% of the product by dry weight.
That’s one of the reasons why our favorite Delta 9 products come from CBDMd. CBDMd has always been strict in complying with federal laws with its CBD products, and now they’re branching out into Delta 9.
